Things I've Learnt Before My 18th Birthday

Tuesday, 20 October 2015
I remember seeing Kat post '20 things before 20' and since it's my 18th on the 28th, I thought I'd round up a few thoughts.

So this is me when I was 12. I was an awkward, shy little girl (which still, slightly, describes me).
I thought that I'd be in school forever, with the same people and I'd never change. Now I'm a year away from moving out and going to uni, with a totally different set of friends.

1. Friends will change and you'll find the right people.
Now I've got a bit older, I've realised it's ok to lose friends because you weren't the right fit. It doesn't make either of you bad people, it just means that other people are better for you. Now I have amazing friends and I'm happy that I worked out that not everyone will like you. I was such a shy person and I hated the thought of losing friends or confrontation. It gets much easier when you find the right people and everything is so much more positive.

2. TAKE PHOTOS!!
So many things happen, which will become your best memories. You may not realise that the time you got really drunk and walked into a pole, or the time you went to the beach in the dark and skinny dipped, would be some of the funniest stories but they are and you want to have the memory of them. I always take random photos now because even the most pointless ones remind you of a certain time. It's so important to document things because you don't realise how much things change and I really appreciate the embarrassing photos.

3. Your awkward phase is a funny story!
Like everyone, I went through an awkward emo phase. Yep, I liked way too much eyeliner and thought pop music was the worst thing ever. It's ok, it passes but it is a funny story. I used to get so embarrassed about the things I said and how I've changed but now I just laugh at myself because I know I've grown up so much since then. I mean, putting on some of those old emo songs is always fun at parties.

4. Wear what you want.
I was always too scared to wear what I wanted because of what people would think. I thought people would laugh or bitch about me, it's not like that! Most people really don't care what you wear. I think if you're confident in what you wear then, most people, will admire that. I always think it's great when you see people wear something a bit different. Also, when I was younger I was so self conscious, so I'd never not wear tights and I'd never wear tight things. I think as I've got older, I've realised that if you feel good then wear whatever you want, no matter if your body is out.

Overall, I just think that I've learnt so many things to do with friendships and my own self confidence. I know now to be me and surround myself with positive people. I'm so excited for the 28th, I'm going to York with my closest friends, so obviously I'll be blogging that!

What have you learnt as you've got older?

  1. Thats so thoughtful and sweet!
I've realised that other people should not choose how you feel about yourself. Because, I used to base all my thoughts around what other people would think of me.

  2. This post warms my heart, I adore the photos! I've definitely been caring less what people think of what I wear lately and just worn what I feel good in and I've actually received more compliments on it which is pretty cool. I definitely need to take more photos though, I always forget to!

  4. I couldn´t agree more with all of the things you mentioned. I went through fairly similar things except for the emo phase. Weirdly, I never went through that.
I´m now in the middle of my 19th year on earth and have moved out. It´s definitely not the same anymore and finding the right friends again is really hard but at least I know the right ones are always waiting for me when I visit home. We still act around each other as if I never moved away.

  5. Oh I loved this post, it made me feel all warm and fuzzy!
It's true that with friends, you win some, you lose some, it's the true friends that stick by you no matter how little or often you talk... I've definitely learnt that over the last few years. xx

  6. Such a lovely post, girlie!
I remember being 17/18 (I sound like a grandma lol) :) It was a strange age as in I thought I had everything figured out and then you get to 22/23, and you're like "Nope, I had nothing figured out" lol :)
But I can tell you for sure that you are so mature for your age and just a sensible, sweet and lovely gilrie, so that's that :)
I am sure you will have a blast in York! ;)
